el tigre.

21 Oct

In every place I´ve lived, there´s always that one bar or restaurant I´ve flocked to for whatever reason. In Berkeley, it was the on-campus classic, Bear´s Lair for Beat the Clock Fridays, familiar faces, and delicious Hefeweizen. At home in Oak Park, it´s Ladyface Alehouse for the gastropub-inspired grub and Cheseborough IPA. And this past weekend, I discovered my first bar in Madrid that fits the bill. It´s name? El Tigre.

This is the place that everyone who´s been to Madrid before me has raved about – ¨free tapas!¨ ¨cheap beer!¨ ¨always crowded!¨ When something has that much hype, there´s no way it can be good (i.e. the Twilight series, Get Him to the Greek, and even Madrid´s very own El Rastro Sunday flea market). El Tigre, however, delivered, and I ended up going there both Friday and Saturday nights.

The bar itself is nothing glamorous – it´s mostly standing-room only, and there were more Americans crammed into the tiny space than I´ve seen in the whole month I´ve been here. That being said, the drink prices are dirt cheap (2 euro for a caña, 6 euro for a HUGE mojito or caipirinha to share). And the best part? With each free drink, the bartenders also give you a heaping plate of delicious tapas, ranging from croquetas and patas bravas to pintxos made with lomo, jamon, or pollo).

While I´m sure Madrid has a whole range of bars to choose from, I´ll have to see if anything can hold a candle to El Tigre.

Hi ! I just found out about your blog, and I love it!

El Tigre is great… but MY favorite was La casa de la tortilla, near metro Bilbao – you pay 12 € and can eat tapas and drink beer and sangria as much as you want! Also “El rey de las tortillas” in Argüelles – you get the drinks in a big tube for forbiddingly cheap prices and get free tapas with it!

Oh I miss Madrid… thanks for this post!

Thanks for commenting and I’m glad you like my blog 🙂

I’ll have to check those two out – I live in Arguelles so will definitely make it to that one really soon!
