con mis tios.

19 Jun

My aunt joined my uncle in Madrid Wednesday morning, and after work got out for me at 13:00, I met up with them and took them to the classic Wednesday location: 100 Montaditos on Fuencarral. We sampled some of my favorites, sipped cervezas and tinto de verano, and then, at my uncle’s request, went to a local Irish pub called Molly Malone’s for a “non-Spanish” beer (Heineken).

On Thursday, we met up again to explore more classic Madrid sights. For lunch, we headed to Taberna Mariano, a classic Spanish restaurant they’d heard about from a friend. The food was good and very traditional: we shared roasted chicken, fried fish, and my favorite: shrimp with garlic and then went over to the royal palace to walk the grounds and check out an temporary exhibit there: Leonardo da Vinci’s “Lady with Ermine.” It’s always cool to see works by someone of his caliber, but it didn’t have the “wow” factor for me that my favorite pieces do.

We also headed to the Mercado de San Miguel for some sangria, walked around Sol and my favorite square in Madrid, Plaza Santa Ana, and checked off Montadito #82 (Queso Azul – definitely not a favorite). That night I headed out to a tapas bar with some friends (La Blanca Paloma) and beat the heat with a cerveza or two, and gathered my things for my trip on the AVE the next day to my favorite city in the world, Barcelona!
