gear up.

After years of running – and years of blisters, shin splints, poor hydration, and the like, I’ve developed a list of running must-haves. Here’s my list of essential running gear:

1. Nike Tempo Track Running Shorts. I basically swear by all things Nike. Maybe it’s because of the story of the company’s founding (Bill Bowerman, one of Steve Prefontaine’s coaches at the University of Oregon created the first Nike flat running shoe in his kitchen with – get this – a waffle iron), or maybe it’s due to the high quality of the products I’ve purchased from Nike over the years. Regardless, these shorts are comfortable and last for a really long time.

2. Champion for Target running tanks. Inexpensive, comfortable, and sleeveless…basically all I need.

3. Garmin Forerunner 305. I decided to invest in this beast of a watch after reading rave reviews about it on a few healthy living blogs I follow, and so far it’s been more than a worthwhile splurge. It spits out your running pace as you run (so I know if I’m on pace for PR mid-race or if I’m simply curious how fast I’m running) as well as the distance and time. My model even came with a heart rate monitor, but so far I’ve yet to make use of it.

4. This website is a great training tool. I plug in my workout after I finish, and have it set to share automatically with Twitter. That means I have my followers able to see just how slow I ran or what my mileage was – an added incentive to train a little bit harder! It’s easy to use and there’s also an iPhone app (Electric Miles) so you can update your training log as soon as you’re done!

dailymile training log. 5. iPod shuffle. Despite my obsession with my iPhone 4, the shuffle is the best thing to run with. It’s light and small… and I can program in a running playlist so I’ll be guaranteed to like all of the songs and won’t waste time or energy bypassing the slow numbers from the Les Miserables soundtrack that may accidentally show up if I’m running with a larger iPod.

apple addict. 6. SPI belt.  I’ve mentioned this before but the benefits are worth repeating. This belt stores a ton of things: keys, ID card, iPod, camera, etc. and it doesn’t jostle or move around while running! I use this thing on any long run – and after a few strides I forget I have it on!

 7. water and gatorade. Water is obviously the best option in order to stay hydrated and re-hydrate post-workout, but after a long run or treadmill sesh at the gym, nothing tastes better to me than yellow (lemon? lemon-lime? not totally sure) Gatorade.

Those basically round-out my running “musts.” I’m less picky about the other stuff – including what I eat pre- and post- workout. Does anyone have any gear they swear by when running or working out?

    I just have the Garmin 205 and I really love it! It’s so fun to challenge myself with it.

    Love your list – minus the gatorade. Never been a fan. Let me just throw this little tid bit out there – don’t run with the iphone 4. I did 16 miles with my iphone in a plastic bag and still ruined it with water damage…err… sweat damage. Wasn’t my finest running moment. Stick with the shuffle! 🙂 And the Nike shorts are all I wear.

    Of course all of the above pertains to when I ran regularly. This hasn’t happened in months. Just waiting for my next kick to kick in! 🙂

      Thanks Kristen! – I know, Gatorade is an acquired taste for sure, and not every flavor is worth the calories, haha. Thank you SO much for the advice about running with the iPhone. I’m too scared to run with it in case I drop it, but I never thought about sweat damage! Scary!
