local eats: ink sack.

Ever since I started watching Top Chef, I have tried to make it to a few of the contestant’s restaurants – I loved Good Stuff in DC, the burger place of Top Chef legend Spike Mendelsohn, and my brother and I spotted Top Chef terror Marcelle as a sous-chef at The Bazaar by José Andres when we went a couple of years ago. I live just a couple of blocks from BOTH of Michael Voltaggio’s flagship restaurants – the sit-down, super fancy Ink. and the smaller, sandwich-shack style place two doors down called ink.sack. (I also read about Ink.sack on The Actor’s Diet a few months ago and vowed to get there ASAP…glad I finally made it!) With endless empty days before me during winter break, I finally had the chance to try it today with my friend Matt!

One thing that makes ink.sack awesome is that it is really affordable – the sandwiches are small but not tiny (larger than the 100 Montaditos fare I was obsessed with in Spain last year). The sandwiches are high-end and range in price from $4-$6 – and they have a whole slew of interesting sides, sodas, and desserts.

I went with the José Andres aka the “Spanish Godfather” consisting of jamón serrano, chorizo, and manchego cheese. Just like being back in Spain. The bread was also perfectly crusty and sweet. I went with a side of BBQ Pork Rinds – not something I would usually order, but delicious and a very large portion.

I stole a couple of Matt’s crab chips – they were good…salty and crab-y? I’d get them again. He also got the Reuben and said it was delicious.

The place was small but we found some standing room next to this wall to eat at, people watch, and check out the place. I am kicking myself for not having been here 100 times so far – it was that good! I’m definitely re-joining the Michael Voltaggio fan club, that’s for sure.

Who’s your favorite “Top Chef” contestant?

I want to go to Atlanta solely to visit Richard Blais’ restaurant. But I am pretty partial to Mickey V.

    Is Ink a sushi restaurant? I remember meeting someone at a bar a while back and he started raving about it. Yes? No? Am I way off? haha. Anyways, the sandwich place you went to looks delicious. I must go soon!

      It’s not sushi but there is a TON of fish on the menuI am currently salivating over the squid ink pastawhich sounds incredible. You NEED to go here – you would love it.
