my brother survived his 21st.

26 Mar

I can’t believe my little brother is 21. Seriously. And when my parents asked 10 years ago “Are you still going to be fighting when Gillian is 24 and Reid is 21?” I think we both knew the answer would be “duh.”

My brother is a junior at UC Santa Cruz and has some of the most diverse interests of anyone I know: punk music (most notably Sublime – he pilgrimages to Long Beach to visit Bradley Nowell’s grave every year on the anniversary of his death. How’s that for dedication?), digital media, working at a bagel shop, booking gigs, interacting with anyone and everyone, street art (appreciating it and hopefully not doing it), skateboarding, and probably a ton of other things I don’t know about.

He’s home for spring break and yesterday he hit the big 2-1, so I headed out to my family’s house after the gym to spend the day with them. We started with lunch at his favorite bagel shop/the place he’s worked on breaks for over 4 years, East Coast Bagels. Afterward, I insisted we get the kid a beer at Ladyface so he could begin to become beer educated.

Five samplers later and I’m *pretty* sure he liked the IPA best. Or maybe it was just wishful thinking? Who knows.

We had a low-key dinner at home (his request was lasagna roll-ups, a childhood throw-back) and my mom used an upside-down 5 for the  “2” candle on his cake. We sang Happy Birthday (I wondered if our family of four constituted a “public performance” for copyright purposes. It doesn’t) and enjoyed a little cake and delicious Ben & Jerry’s Red Velvet Cake ice cream.

ghetto cake.

Reid spent the night enjoying AMFs out with his buddies in Silverlake and is planning an epic weekend in Vegas this weekend. I guess we’re not as different as you might think?

Happy 21st, little bro!
