why i love my law school.

26 Apr

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend two events for newly-admitted students at my law school.

Last Thursday, I attended a reception for scholarship recipients at Dodger Stadium. We had appetizers and drinks in the Stadium Club, and I had the chance to speak with a bunch of prospective students. I nerded out and gushed to all of the potential class of 2016-ers about the positive experience I’ve had Loyola Law School, Los Angeles. I was surprised to run into a high school classmate, Samantha Gold, and urged her to choose us over the school up PCH a ways.

this view wasn't too bad either.

The next day, I attended a panel on “student life” and blathered on about what my experience has been like. Afterward, we mingled a bit. I found myself switching into sorority mode instantly in terms of talking to these admitted students. Example: “I personally haven’t done a clinic, but hopefully later I can introduce you to my friend Heather who did.”

Loyola put on an impressive show on Friday – dinner was in the form of 5 different food trucks, and all of the different student organizations were out in full-force to answer questions. My evidence prof. was there too, and I think I scared him a bit singing his praises. Whooops.

So why do I love my law school? Well, for a few reasons:

The vibe. Loyola students are smart – and driven – but I love that the Los Angeles laid-back vibe still permeates the campus. I love having lunch most days with my friends outside, walking for a post-final beer or two to L.A. live, and wearing shorts most months out of the year. I like the fact people are friendly, but also competitive (but not in a cut-throat way). I also love the people and have met some friends I know I’ll be in touch with for years to come.

The community. I feel way more attached to Loyola then I do to my undergrad (no offense, Cal). Loyola alums and professors really want to help “their own” succeed. Example: Before I even committed to Loyola, my friend Matt put me in touch with a Loyola alum. I spoke with him, who put me in touch with a current student. That current student then put me in touch with a current 2L, who gave me all of the tricks of the trade on how to do well my 1L year. Additionally, a professor of mine my 1L year recommended me for an externship this semester. These things do not happen at huge, multi-thousand people universities, so I love the community at LLS.

The campus. Helloooooo…Frank Gehry designed it.

The opportunities. Loyola’s DTLA location is pretty clutch. I was able to extern in the LA Superior Court’s Criminal Court building last summer, and U.S. District Court this semester. Another amazing experience was the chance to go to Vienna, Austria as a member of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Team. So cool.

So excuse my “I love my law school blah blah blah” post, but I wanted to do it…especially since finals are coming up and I may need a reminder on how much I actually enjoy it. That, and I can’t stand seeing people Facebook statuses about how much they hate law school. Bro, you chose to come here.

Are you in law school? Do you love/hate it?

Love this post! I also love Loyola. Finally bought a branded sweatshirt to commemorate my time here. And totally agree that I feel way more connected to it than Cal…

Thanks Rachael! I am glad I’m not the only one who feels more connected to it than Cal – but Cal is just bigger/different experience. I bought a branded sweatshirt this year – had to survive 1L before I committed!
