deep in the dog days.

24 Jul

Where do I even begin since it’s been two solid months since I’ve posted anything?  I can’t even use “I’m busy at work” as an excuse — I was busy, but busier earlier in the year when I was better about blogging.  So, in lieu of giving you a play-by-play of every single thing I’ve done in the last two months, I thought I’d summarize with some highlights. So here’s what I’ve been up to:

#AllRiledUp + #AllinonCoughlin

My friends Riley and Johnny got married last weekend and I was also honored to be able to participate in the bachelorette festivities back in May in Austin, Texas and I also had a blast at the wedding.  Riley is my best friend by “transitive property” (my best friend from HS’s best friend from college) and she and I have been lucky enough to forge our own friendship.  Her husband is pretty great too.  Anyway,  we had a blast in Austin and in Las Vegas for the wedding itself.  Inside jokes for DAYS.

We had a great time in Austin — my friends made me “Texas two-step” with a random lawyer they “found” (thanks, everyone).  My revenge was getting the DJ at the wedding to play “Tuesday.”  But I digress…I loved exploring the Austin street art scene,  checking out some local gastropubs, and doing the whole “dirty 6th” thing.  We all had a great time.

The wedding was held in Summerlin — a little ways off the strip — and it was such a pretty location for a wedding!  Since my closest friends were in the wedding itself, I kicked it with Whitney and Dominique’s dates.  We came up with a pretty long list of inside jokes in just a few hours.  I had a great time at the wedding and have never seen Riley or Johnny look happier!

(Total fail…I didn’t get a single photo with the bride, groom, or my friends who were bridesmaids).

Palm Springs with my #LAwHers

One weekend late in June, I spent two epic days in the desert with my friends Heather and Kristina.  (We dubbed ourselves #LAwHers because we are all (female) lawyers in Los Angeles.  Oh yeah, we also all have quite the social media problems).  Heather is married to my good friend from law school, Blake, and I met Kristina through Heather.  We had the best time — Heather and I ended up at a drag show (?!) the night SCOTUS made gay marriage legal in all 50 states — so cool.  Kristina joined us the next morning and the three of us spent some QT in the pool.  We had fun goofing off and celebrating Kristina’s recent engagement, but also bonded over the #lawlife and gave each other advice.  I am so lucky to have such smart, supportive, gunnerish friends who get me.  Oh, and we all had major luck the next day the outlets and date shakes are the best things, ever.

Fourth of July

I was supposed to be in Palm Springs for the second week in a row,  but when plans changed at the last minute I improvised and it ended up being a great weekend.  For the past several years I’ve done a 5k on the 4th, and this year I was able to keep the tradition alive.  My parents joined me for a short little race in Newbury Park, not far from where I grew up.  Racing short distances is always a struggle — and this course had a pretty substantial hill.  I ended up getting first in my age group — my mom took second, and my dad took 3rd, and we all walked away with watermelon “medals.”

I spent the rest of the day party-hopping in DTLA and watched fireworks while some of my high school friends got into a dance-off with some random people on our roof.

I’ve also been lucky to hit up a few sporting events this summer — multiple Dodger games and FC Barcelona v. LA Galaxy.  Nothing better than a stadium beer.

On Wednesday,  my running bud Andres roped me into an 11 mile “run” (some parts were  more like an insanely steep hike) from Echo Park Lake to the top of Griffith Park to see the Teahouse that a collective of artists constructed in the middle of the night.   The city is allegedly taking down the teahouse on Monday, so I wanted to see it while I could.  The run was tough — my calves started tweaking out on me about halfway — but it was SO COOL to see the teahouse.  I didn’t snap any photos, but the sunset over the Hollywood sign and the views of the city were pretty breathtaking as well.

DinnerLab

My friend Eric introduced me to DinnerLab a few months ago, an in June we hit up a delicious multi-course dinner put on by Recreo Supper Club.  It was held at the Annenberg Space for Photography in the CAA building – and every single thing we tasted was incredible.  I’d totally recommend checking out DinnerLab if you’re at all a foodie.  The seating is communal which is awesome – we met some really cool people and also chatted with the chef.    Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 11.51.05 AM

fun thing a day (or how i spent a month doing nothing).

16 Sep

So . . . some of you may know that I had 5 weeks off between the bar exam and starting work.  I had a nice trip to Turks & Caicos, and then I spent about 4 weeks “on vacation” in Los Angeles.  It was relaxing and fun — and I vowed to do one fun thing a day, every day (which can be surprisingly hard when most of my friends were, you know, at work).  I wanted to share some of the fun things I did here…

  • Ventured to the The Last Bookstore (this photo is taken in the $1 room – every single book is $1. Insane).

  • I went on an amazing run with my high school cross country team on the fifth anniversary of the death of one of my classmates and former track teammates, Brian Wolverton, who was killed while serving our country in Afghanistan. It was a nice way to honor him and made me proud to be a graduate of OPHS.

  • On Sunday, we woke up and drove home — and I got ready to start my job! (more on that to come!)

What’s the most fun thing you did this summer?

a tiny blip of freedom.

23 May

I finished law school last Wednesday, graduated on Sunday, and started studying for the bar on Monday.  All of that is super weird and surreal.  In some weird way, I am not hating studying for the bar (so far) but it’s a LONG summer.  I feel like staying positive and on a routine will be really important for me.

I wanted to share how I spent my tiny little blip of freedom between my last final and graduation.  I enjoyed the scorching LA temps last week during my 4-day summer!

I snapped this shot as I walked out of my last final, ever.  I love my law school’s campus and am not taking it for granted as I study here this summer…unnamed-3 Did you know LLS was designed by Frank Gehry?

I’ve been enjoying runs with the DTLA Running Group…

10259724_10100432816539089_4098723907841158522_n…as well as gym workouts and following along (as best I can) with the Tone it Up #BIKINISERIES.

unnamed

Last Thursday, my friend Alexis and I celebrated finishing law school (me) and 1L (her) with some pool time at our apartment complex!

10339719_10202493016820630_7271715590359263422_nand on Saturday I walked into the spin room to teach my class and my people had balloons, a grad gift basket, and a card signed by everyone for me! It was one of the sweetest, most unexpected things and almost made me cry.  They also gave me a Quest Bar, furthering the obsession…

unnamed-2After my class on Saturday, I met up with my parents and my aunt and uncle who were in town for my graduation.  We enjoyed a nice lunch at City Tavern.

After lunch,  I headed out to Santa Monica for my friend Chris’ graduation party.  We ended up at the Shangri-La rooftop bar.  I loved spending the afternoon with my classmates as well as my best friend, Whitney, and her roommate Molly. The vodka sodas were great too. #cheatday.

10330375_10100266141093269_1074830773013338571_n

Before bar studying started I obviously stopped to smell the roses stare at this gorgeous building.

unnamed-1

I also made a paleo-ish recipe: Pizza with Cauliflower Crust.  SO good.  If I were an annoying person I would say it is “TO DIE.” The cauliflower, parsley, cheese, and egg combo create a crust that is very bread-like. Definitely will be making this again.

unnamed

Since Monday, I have been studying TORTS ON TORTS ON TORTS and have fallen back into the 1L-like routine of making torts related jokes, so that’s clearly good. I’ve also been working out a lot (surprising no one) and going to bed early like an old person.

What’s been the highlight of your week?

(favorite) days of summer.

18 Aug

Tomorrow is the first day of my last year of law school.  Even typing that is UNREAL.  I am oddly sad to start my last year of school, ever.  I have always loved school and love law school the most of all, so it’s definitely bittersweet. (I know, #nerdalert like whoaaaa).

I had a fabulous summer and wanted to capture some of my very favorite moments:

Running a Marathon

Running a marathon has been on my “bucket list” of goals for forever.  After I was sidelined from running the LA Marathon in 2012 due to a gnarly IT-band injury, I decided this year was the year after running a strong half in May.  I trained for it in less than a month (I wouldn’t recommend that, but hey).  I felt like I wasn’t going to ever walk again and may have lost a toenail or two, but I completed my first marathon this summer in 3:49.  It was probably the thing about this summer I am most proud of, although it wasn’t necessarily the most “fun.”

Teaching Spin

I was really on a roll with checking off fitness goals this summer.  Ever since I REALLY got into spinning (2007/2008), I’ve had the eventual goal of getting certified.  I’ve been meaning to do a full post about this, but I spent a day getting certified in late June, took a test online, and a week or so later I started co-teaching at my local Gold’s Gym.  I’m now an official employee and teach Saturday mornings.  It has been fun and challenging, and I am grateful Gold’s took me on.  My favorite instructor is my mentor and has guided me and given me great advice.  Now I just need to try and sound like less of a dork when I speak on the mic.

Los Doyers

One of my favorite things this summer was going to a TON of Dodger games.  I RANDOMLY happened to be at Dodger Stadium the night Yasiel Puig made his MLB debut, and this season has been straight-up magic so far.   I’ve been lucky to go with law school friends, high school friends, a study abroad/hostel friend,  my parents, work friends…etc. It’s been an awesome summer for my Dodger game attendance, and for the boys in blue. #AllTheyDoIsWin

Chicago.

One highlight of the summer was going to Chicago for my friends’ AK and Andrea’s wedding, and then spending a few more days there doing Chi-town things.

IMG_4309

Santa Cruz for Reid’s Graduation

My parents and I had a great time spending a relaxing weekend in Santa Cruz to watch my brother graduate.  I especially loved the short run I squeezed in along the coast and exploring my brother’s neighborhood!

Outdoor picnics/boozing.

I loved going to Street Food Cinema‘s movie nights at Exposition Park this summer – I managed to make it there twice.  I also discovered a new love – the Wine Tasting Fridays at Barsndall Art Park. The 4th Annual DTLA Craft Beer Crawl merits its own post as well – so fun.

Paddleboarding.

I only did this once, but it was great.  I’m adding “getting on the water” as a new fitness/life goal.  I want to own a paddleboard, especially one that says “YOLO” on it.  995980_10102316772371403_1849457150_n

DTLA Running Group.

Although technically I started running with these guys in the spring, I started really getting into it this summer.  I average one run a week with a group I found through meetup.com. I’ve explored some awesome areas near downtown: Vista Hermosa Park, Echo Park Lake, Boyle Heights, and LA State Historic Park.  I’ve also met some great people – last week we did beer and tacos after!

I’m looking forward to this semester and hope to tackle some goals, learn a lot, and have a lot of fun. #ThreeLFreeL may be the relevant hashtag.

What is your favorite summer memory?

dodger baseball is on the air.

30 Jun

If you’ve been following me on social media, you know that I’ve been going to a bunch of Dodger games lately.  Although I’ve been a fan for ages, now that I live so close to the stadium I am that much more incentivized to go to as many games as possible.  Although the Dodgers are still last in the NL West, right now we’re only 5 games back (and only one game behind the Giants). The team is still somewhat of a mess, but they have a renewed energy thanks to Puig.

I was at the game on Monday against the Giants – where we saw a Puig HR and a victory.  This was game 3 in what ended up being a 6-game win streak for the Dodgers.

IMG_4063

IMG_4064

I also attended the game on Friday which happened to be the Dodgers worst loss at home since 1947…when the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn. The Dodgers lost 16-1…and the six-game winning streak came to an end.

IMG_4090

I wasn’t at last night’s game, but it was pretty comical to watch Puig KICK a ball from the outfield into the stands…accidentally. And then watch his frustration when it was deemed a ground-rule double.

Favorite MLB teams? Traditions for going to games? Let me hear ’em!
