2014 rewind.

30 Dec

Welp, the time has come for my favorite blog post to write — and it’s sort of hard to believe I’ve been doing this for 5 years now.  If you want to compulsively follow my previous mash-ups of the years past, check out:

I love a good pop song and also reminiscing about the past year, so here’s my overview of the year with one song that illustrates the month for me for one reason or another — sometimes the significance goes beyond “I like playing this song in my spin class” and sometimes that’s all there is to it. Also, you should listen to this year’s DJ Earworm track, United State of Pop 2014 – Do What You Wanna Do.

2014 had a lot of milestone events, but it was also filled with a lot of different transitions.  Normally I am sad for years to end — and while this was a great one, I am stoked for the fresh start (and fewer transitions) that 2015 will bring.

January – Type of Way (Rich Homie Quan)

What can I say, I loved playing this song throughout all of 2014 in spin, workouts, and just whenever.  January was mostly filled with marathon training and kicking off my final semester of law school, but I also spent New Year’s in SF and went on a gorgeous run on New Year’s day through the Presidio and the Marina.  At the end of the month, I celebrated my birthday with a little dive-bar action at King Eddy’s Saloon. I loved combining people from all facets of my life — law school, high school, my family, undergrad, gym buddies, and my running group.  This year’s fiesta has a lot to live up to.

February – Drunk in Love (Kanye Remix)

This song more or less became somewhat of an anthem for me — well, actually just the mostly-profane Kanye intro.  My  life motto may or may not be the following: “know them haters talkin, always had us very wary/Yup! On the 35th of Nevuary.” #TeamYeezy

February was pretty low-key, I got in a long 20-miler pre-LA Marathon (on a Monday, before my school day began, no less).  I also partnered with Thirty48 to test out some socks and compression.  Otherwise,  I was busy with school, and took some fun classes my final semester (Reality TV – yes that is a class, and Sports Law) as well as some that proved crucial for the bar and beyond (Remedies, Business Associations – THANK GOD I took Biz Ass).

stopping point on my 20-miler.

March – All of Me (John Legend – Tiesto Remix)

This song will always remind me of the first mile of the LA Marathon, heading out of Dodger Stadium onto Sunset Blvd.  I spent the first week of March nervously fretting over what I had built up to be a huge race — I was more nervous for this than for any of the three days of the bar exam. #nojoke.  While I didn’t BQ in March, I had an incredible and memorable race and my parents were the best spectators.  I also got to meet Ryan Hall thanks to Asics.  Post-marathon, I hobbled around for about a week, went to law school prom, and made the big girl move to my own apartment.

April – #SELFIE  (The Chainsmokers)

The question heard ’round the world this spring was: XXPro, or Valencia?  This song was integral to my Ragnar experience (a highlight from 2014, for sure) as well as #WESTWeekend (labeled that because my best friend’s initials are W.E.S.T. and her two college best friends and I kidnapped her for a weekend of beer and (mildly) bad decisions in San Diego).  So fun.  I also finished my last law school classes and made some blog progress by attending a fitness event with Lorna Jane + Sweat Pink in Santa Monica as well as FitTrends event with Jamba Juice and Venus Williams.

May – Happy (Pharrell Williams)

May had lots of little awesome moments — I saw my sweet high school friend Kelsey get married, studied and took my final finals, graduated from law school (still weird), and then immediately started studying for the bar exam, literally the next day.  I also ran the #LiveUltimate “Quarter Marathon” and got to rub elbows with Ryan Hall yet again.  I also started a pretty intense Paleo challenge, and lived to tell about it.

well this is weird.

well this is weird.

June – Fancy (Iggy Azalea)

So June may have actually been the opposite of fancy — aside from a fun Father’s Day brunch (with my Dad, surprise surprise) and a 10k supporting the Midnight Mission, June was pretty regimented with bar study.  “Me time” consisted of morning work outs and the occasional (okay, incessant) social media binge.

July – Rather Be (Clean Bandit)

This song LITERALLY was my anthem the month of July.  I mean I listened to it every morning before bar prep, as a break in between practice essays or MBE sets, and again at night.  Whatever works, right?  Besides studying like a crazy person, I ran a fun 5k in Redondo Beach on July 4th, and enjoyed a total break from studying the rest of the day with a little day-drinking action.  I also joined some blog buddies for the Griffith Park Marathon Relay, which was an awesome experience.  The last three days were spent bar-ing.  While I would NEVER want to do it again, the exam itself was not nearly as bad as it could have been, and the lunch breaks alongside the hotel’s pool weren’t so bad.

August –  Believe Me (Lil Wayne f/ Drake)

Not sure why I like this song so much.  Must be the lyric “diamonds on my roly face/cannot be exfoliated.”  August was awesome.  I spent a week relaxing and doing outdoorsy things in Turks & Caicos with my bar studdy buddy, Aviva.  I joined the rest of my fam for a staycation in Hermosa Beach, and I tried to do one fun thing a day in DTLA — this included kayaking, beaching it, going out, etc.

September – I Mean It (G-Easy f/ Remo)

September was a pretty big transitional month — I started working at a law firm!  I also kicked off the end of my “summer” with a short stint to the Bay Area with Whitney to see the Cal home opener and to see my Aunt and Uncle.  We dragged my uncle to Henry’s — he loved it — and he took us to Cal players’ post-game BBQ, thanks to his awesome connections.  So fun.  I spent the month slowly adjusting to work — lots of trainings and small assignments.

October – Tuesday (Makonnen f/Drake)

Um, short of my body manifesting stress in literally every way possible, October was incredible.  The highlight by far was my experience at the Nike Women’s Half Marathon.  I’d done this race twice before, but this weekend was pure magic.  From getting to run the day before with Shalane Flanagan and Joan Benoit Samuelson (and then seeing them again mid-race), to the brunch I attended c/o @NikeLA, to the unexpected PR, this race goes down as my favorite, ever.  The rest of the weekend was great, too — I got to work out of my firm’s SF office, saw old college friends, and attended the Cal game vs. UCLA with my uncle, Dad, and some of my best friends from college.

Henry’s line with my dad.

Also in October, I ran #RnRLA with #DTLARunning.  Not a PR, but a fun local event with my favs through my city. Obviously “Tuesday” was on the playlist for both races.

November – Blank Space (Taylor Swift)

I hate that I love a Taylor Swift song, but I love this.  Whoops.  The first three weeks of November were spent nervously anticipating bar results (I passed, in case you’re new here).  I also spent some time at home over Thanksgiving weekend, saw my hometown favs and ran a Turkey Trot with my mom, and hit up the Malibu Soul-Cycle (meh).  I felt like November was pretty crazy, but when I look back on it, I mostly worked, saw friends, and worked out…so I think the first three week’s nerves were sorta the focus.

December – Dangerous (David Guetta)

Well, well, well what can I say about December.  I got sworn into the CA Bar, which was pretty awesome…and my law school also had a nice breakfast honoring some of us who were inducted into an honor society.  I normally don’t love ceremonies, but the swearing in was so nice and I actually enjoyed the speeches. The first weekend kicked-off the month with my firm’s holiday party, and a half marathon the next morning out in Irvine for the #LexusLaceUp series.  That same day I flew to Vegas for a quick 24-hour stint. (Still mad we didn’t stay at Light long enough to hear what I am sure would have been the dopest remix of “Tuesday”, ever).  December was also home to my very favorite day of the year, the SANTA Monica Pub Crawl in which IPAs were imbibed and a festive time was had by all. Countdown to next year is under way).  I also got involved with some interesting assignments at work, and enjoyed some downtime over Christmas with the fam.  December was a doozy, but that’s how I like ’em.

5 Jan

Sooooo I’m a bit tradition-obsessed on this ol’ blog…and I know I write the majority of this stuff for my own amusement/to have memories recorded…but one of my favorite posts to write every year is my “year in review” post, in the form of a mash-up.

How it works: One song for every month that symbolizes that month for me in one way or another, together with the highlights from that month + a photo or two.  So here goes nothin’…

January – Don’t You Worry Child (Swedish House Mafia)

I was obsessed with SHM and this song last year at this time and it also sums up what was a very busy month for me.  It started with my friends Blake and Heathers’ wedding, and then two days later I began an externship with the Hon. R. Gary Klausner in the US District Court.  On top of that, I was busy with moot court practices, assignments for my journal, and taking Evidence.  The month ended with a weekend in Portland for my friends Jeff and Kate’s wedding and then my 25th birthday.  So, I guess the admonition of “not to worry” was perfect for 01/13.

last year's birthday celebrations.

February – Rattle (Bingo Players)

February started off with the first of five half-marathons (I went 1:45 at Surf City), and was obsessed with Bingo Players’ “Rattle” during that race. February was a busy month — I was getting ready for moot court competition in March, and essentially working full time at the externship + a demanding class. One thing that helped me stay sane (less rattled?) was lots and lots of Soul-Cycle.

Surf City Half.

March – Mirrors (Justin Timberlake)

March was a crazy month. When I wasn’t doing nerdy law school stuff, I was going to concerts (STS9 and Purity Ring), hearing Mindy Kaling talk about how funny she is, and going out in Santa Monica.  I also spent 9 days in Vienna, Austria for a moot court competition which was an adventure.  The end of the month was one of the most stressful, though, as my roommate and I learned we our apartment was broken into, our landlord refused to accommodate our requests for increased security, we broke our lease and moved the heck out. (That trickled into April, but you get the idea).

April – Pour it Up (Rihanna)

April was also pretty insane — Jenn and I dealt with crazy landlord drama…but in the long run it all worked out because we moved to DTLA. Hellooooo upgrade. (DTLA >>>>>> West Hollywood).  For me personally, April was a huge transition month — I finished up all of my law school extra-curriculars as well as my externship.

I will always remember April 15, 2013 because I was glued to Twitter and could not believe the events of the Boston Marathon — really that whole next week was shocking to me as a runner.  I joined the #DTLARunning Group on April 16th. It felt so nice to be around people who “got it” and running with them has made me stronger ever since.

May – Get Lucky (Daft Punk)

May was a great month — I started it off with Soul Cycle with my friend Michelle, ran a speedy 13.1 in Orange County (1:39:56 at the OC Half) with Whitney, took my Evidence final, decided to do the Rock n Roll San Diego full marathon, ran my first 20 miler, celebrated graduations, bridal showers, and started a 10-week firm job.  Awesomely busy month.

June – Instant Crush (Daft Punk)

One of the highlights of June, no doubt, was seeing Yasiel Puig’s MLB debut.  AMAZING…and that kicked off my renewed Dodger dedication (I lost count of how many games I went to in 2013…but at least 12).

I also ran a marathon in June.  NBD.  (Synopsis: Felt great first 18 miles, wanted to die and debated crawling miles 18-26).  In other fitness news, I rode a spin bike for 3 straight hours and raised over $700 to fund cancer research, and I got certified to teach spin.

June was filled with tons of fun firm events — seeing Jimmy Kimmel live and meeting Will Smith probably is at the top of the list. I also enjoyed traveling to Santa Cruz for my brother’s college graduation. WHAT A MONTH.

July – I am a God (Kanye West)

In July, I got hired by my gym as a spin instructor. #IsThisRealLife?  I’ve loved teaching there ever since — total gym nerd. I also rounded out my summer job with a couple of fun events — my favorite was sailing in Marina del Rey. (Yes, it’s a real place for those of you who’ve seen “The Californians.”) After my job concluded, my parents and I headed out to Chicago for a few days to see my friends Andrew and Andrea get married and to explore the city.  Fun was had by all.

August – We Can’t Stop (Miley Cyrus)

In August, I started getting back into a more well-rounded fitness regime.  I ran with my running group regularly, taught spin, and started law school classes again. I also took (and passed) the ethics portion of the CA Bar exam, the MPRE. #phew.

#DTLARunning.  Because duh.

September – Wrecking Ball (Miley Cyrus – Palladium Remix)

While much of September was filled with boring law school classes, it was punctuated by a few awesome things.  First, I started volunteering at a local middle school a few hours every week to prepare them for a mock trial in November.  Middle schoolers are hilarious. I also picked up a second spin class (for a total of two per week), began a stint as a research assistant for my favorite professor, and spent a long weekend in NYC with three of my best college girlfriends!

Me, Kathleen, and Michelle day-drinking in Bryant Park.

October – Versace (Migos f/ Drake, Meek Mill, and Tyga)

Honorable Mention:  Worst Behavior (Drake)

October consisted of a few things:  working with my mock trial students,  spending a lot of time running with my running group and teaching spin, watching the Dodgers clinch the NLDS and supporting their bid to try and knock the Cardinals out of the NLCS, and half-marathons. (Long Beach in 1:40:40 and, weirdly enough, #RnRLA in 1:42:42).  I also attended two great meet-ups in October — #FitBlogLA and one before #RnRLA hosted by Pavement Runner at one of my second homes, Yard House.

November – Team (Lorde)

In November, I started volunteering and running with Back on My Feet – Team Homeboy! I also ran a couple of smaller races (Mustache Dache and the DTLA Turkey Trot), spent some time at home with my family for Thanksgiving, and concluded both my middle school mock trial and my own Trial Advocacy class.

December – Christmas Wrapping (The Waitresses)

I know what you’re thinking…why is she including some old song from the 80s? Well, I heard this song for the first time ever at the starting line of Santa to the Sea and became obsessed. I also became obsessed with that course because I PR’d (1:36:58).  I also ran a lot with BoMF and we had our first race ever which was awesome. I spent the first half of December in a mad-dash to learn Criminal Procedure and Trusts & Wills, but after finals I spent my time gallivanting around LA at various Christmas parties, and I rang in 2013 in SF.

What song sums up your 2013?  What’s your favorite song from last year?

I love this actual mash-up every year from DJ Earworm: United State of Pop 2013 – Living the Fantasy.

Here are my previous Yearly Mashups:

2013 – the year in running.

20 Dec

I love end-of-the-year surveys and when I saw this one on Ashley’s blog I couldn’t resist jumping on the bandwagon. Here’s how 2013 went for me, running-wise. Spoiler alert: it was a good year.

I didn’t keep track of my total mileage — it was spotty.  I focused on running when I felt like it, and cross-training like whoaaa.  One fitness goal of mine for 2014 is going to be to track my mileage.

Marathon: 1 (Rock n Roll San Diego – 3:49.)

Half-Marathons: 5 (Surf City – 1:45, OC Half -1:39:56, Long Beach-1:40:40Rock n Roll LA-1:42:42, and Santa to the Sea 1:36:58)

10ks – 3 (Hollywood Half 10k,  Midnight Mission 10k, Turkey Trot LA)

5ks – 5 (Firefly Run, Surf City 4th of July 5k,  Mustache Dache, Turkey Trot 5k, and Christmas 2 Give 5k coming up this Saturday!)

Best race experience?

Santa to the Sea!

I loved this race not just because of the PR that came with it.  It was a fun, flat course and had great crowd support, was well organized, and I loved finishing by the Pacific Ocean.

Best run?

It’s hard for me to pick one — I had so many great runs with my DTLA running club since I joined in April.  I love our runs to the USC track possibly the most… Or any run with an epic view of DTLA.

A close runner up would be a run I did with my friend Emily when I visited Chicago for my friends’ wedding.

Best new piece of gear?

Garmin Forerunner 10. Thank god for this little guy.  I love how light it is and I have it set to show me current pace and distance.  I like that during races I don’t see total time — but I can with one pretty easy click.

Best piece of running advice you received?

After a speedy run with my DTLA running group before my first marathon, one guy said “do not run a single mile of your marathon as fast as you ran tonight.” Well said.

Most inspirational runner?

I have a few answers to this question.  First the runners I run with every week with Back on My Feet are inspiring.  They are coming from places of adversity and are out there logging the mileage.

My friend Katherine inspires me — she PR’d in the marathon by 32 minutes and is a very dedicated runner.

Finally, in terms of within the blog world, HRG is easily the most inspirational. She had a pretty tumultuous year personally and still broke 1:30 in the half-marathon, and remains insanely upbeat and positive. Love her.

If you could sum up your year in a couple of words, what would they be?

Pushing myself, re-inspired, getting after it!

31 Dec

If you haven’t been able to tell by reading this blog, I love traditions. One thing I have done on this blog for awhile now is to recap my year via songs. [Check out 2010 and 2011 here!] I love music and I think it’s a great way to reminisce on the past year – plus I like re-reading these posts to remember everything that happened in that year! Before you check out my 2012 song selections, you should listen to DJ Earworm’s 2012 mash-up. Here’s mine:

January – Calvin Harris Feel So Close

I picked this song because it reminds me of the best winter break ever – where I checked out a ton of new restaurants, went on a bunch of LA hikes, went out, and explored LA. In January I also started second semester and reunited with some of my favorite AXOs,  celebrated my birthday with a dinner + drinks, and ran a half-marathon with one of my best law school friends, Blake, at the Rose Bowl, and battled running injuries off and on.

February  – Big Sean f/ Nicki Minaj – Dance

In February, I met my first real blog friend in person (Katherine of Left Coast Contessa). I also became re-obsessed with spin (indoor cycling) after almost a YEAR away and spent more time in the gym. Other than that, February was a pretty low-key month. I was briefly obsessed with this song due to the part when Nicki Minaj says “Islands of Waikikiiiiiiiiii.” I annoyed everyone repeating that for a few weeks.

March – Flo Rida f/ Sia – Wild Ones

In March, I took a torts midterm, headed to Palm Springs with Whitney, Matt, and Jenn, and was able to fight off a knee injury to run three miles with my Dad during his marathon. During March I also went to my first Kings game, headed home to celebrate my brother’s 21st birthday, and studied a good amount.

April – Gotye – Somebody That I Used to Know (FatRat remix)

April was a pretty intense school month – I had a lot of assignments due and geared up for finals. I had a beach day with my law school bests, went to a couple of comedy shows, had an oral argument, and lived vicariously through my parents’ trip to Vegas. I also did the She Runs LA 10k, tried Pure Barre, and did  The Color Run with my friend Riley. At the end of the month I went to a  Bruce Springsteen concert!

May – The Naked & Famous – Young Blood (Tiësto & Hardwell Remix)

Like any month where finals occur, the majority of it is spent studying. I spent the first 2+ weeks studying for and taking my finals, punctuated by small study breaks with my law school budz – like the time we celebrated Cinco Day Drinko instead of studying for Torts. In May I officially FINISHED 1L buttttt then immediately spent a week on the write-on competition to join a law review or a journal.  I finally kick-started summer with kayaking with my mom, a hike with Taylor, and some solid vedge-time. I also discovered my love for SoulCycle in May.

June – Carly Rae Jepsen Call Me Maybe Mash-ups (Call Me Greyhound – Swedish House Mafia + Call Me Maybe v. 99 Problems)

June was officially summer. I kicked it off with a short trip to SD  with Jenn where I PR’d in the half-marathon (1:38:55), began my externship at the criminal courts building, did a little paddle boarding  (I still have a bruise on my hip),went to Dodger games, hiked, and spent a weekend in SF where Whitney, Kathleen, and I created the “cerveza cycle.”

July – Kirko Bangz “Drink in my Cup”

July started off with a bang with a Fourth of July 10k in the Palisades, followed up with a little rage-fest with my section budz. I also discovered electronic musician Sahy Uhns, celebrated my blog’s third birthday, and saw The Producers at The Hollywood Bowl.

August – Kanye West f/ Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz “Mercy”

In August, I saw The Hood Internet perform live, was inspired by various Olympic endeavors + caught up with friends from home, wrapped up my externship, went through On Campus Interviewing at Loyola, and traveled to Orange County with my mom for a few days where we saw Pageant of the Masters, paddle-boarded, and soaked up the sun. I also missed a one-night stint in Vegas due to a sudden onslaught of an illness, serving as a reminder that sometimes I need to listen to my body. I also celebrated Aviva’s birthday on the Sunset Strip and went back to school as a 2L.

In September, I ran my high school’s annual pancake breakfast race, hit up the SC/Cal game, and went to Monterey for my friend Angela’s wedding. I also started going to Trivia night at Barney’s Beanery in WeHO. When I wasn’t gallivanting around, I was busy with my course-load (Con Law, Law of Sales, Torts II, and Ethical Lawyering) as well as my extra-curricular activities of the Entertainment Law Review and the Wilhelm C. I also ran two 5ks – the ‘Stache Dash in Costa Mesa with my roommate and her boyfriend, and the Conejo Valley Turkey Day Trot at Cal Lutheran University with my running buddy Hannes on Thanksgiving morning. I also enjoyed a long weekend at home for Thanksgiving that was punctuated by our annual “Blackout Wednesday” tradition.

I spent the overwhelming majority of December studying and taking finals. I finished on December 14th and then celebrated in Manhattan Beach. Celebrations continued with Loyola Bar Review, the Santa Monica Pub Crawl, and my friend’s Hawaiian Christmas party.
